Patek Philippe reintroduces the chain-style bracelet in the Golden Ellipse collection.

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, renowned for its unique shape inspired by the golden section, debuted in 1968 with a yellow gold case and blue gold dial. It then later appeared in various forms sporting different gold hues and dial colours. For its 40th anniversary in 2008, a larger platinum model with a blue sunburst dial (5738P-001) was introduced, followed by a rose gold version with an ebony-black sunburst dial (5738R-001) in 2018. Initially offered with leather straps and diverse chain bracelets, the Golden Ellipse became a 1970s style icon and a timeless classic. In 2024, Patek Philippe reinterprets this classic with the new, ultra-thin, Golden Ellipse Reference 5738/1R-001.
Since the 1910s, Patek Philippe has been celebrated for its innovative bracelet designs. Their famed bracelets fall into two types: chain and mechanical. The former are handcrafted by artisan chainsmiths, ensuring flexibility and quality, while the latter are instead CNC-machined from metals and hand-finished. Noteworthy examples include the Nautilus, "Goutte," and ladies' Twenty~4 bracelets. For the latest chain-style bracelet attached to this Golden Ellipse, Patek has chosen to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern CNC technology.

Reviving the golden era of horological design, Patek Philippe introduces the Ref. 5738 with an elegant chain-style bracelet in rose gold. This new bracelet, developed over 15 years, showcases a modern, patented construction that recreates the style of classic chain bracelets while eliminating previous technical drawbacks, particularly in length adjustment. Comprising 363 parts, including over 300 hand-assembled links, the bracelet is entirely hand-polished for superior comfort and style. Moreover, the clasp, adorned with an engraved motif matching the bracelet, offers three notches for precise adjustments and comfort.
Bringing it all together, the ebony-black "sunburst" dial showcases rose gold baton-style hour markers and slender cheveu-style hands. The watch embodies a timeless and understated elegance thanks to this and the black onyx cabochon set into the crown. Within the watch, the ultra-thin automatic Caliber 240 beats. It has an off-centre mini-rotor crafted in gold, thus enabling the case to maintain an impressively slim profile of just 5.9 mm. With that, this Golden Ellipse is the slimmest watch in Patek Philippe's regular collection.
