Back in 1986, Rado introduced the world to high-tech ceramic, and it was a game-changer for the industry. With its silky-smooth feel, incredible durability, scratch resistance, and feather-light weight, it quickly won over watch enthusiasts everywhere. While it shares some traits with everyday ceramics, high-tech ceramic is a marvel of advanced science.
Under precise conditions, pure powders of aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, and silicon nitride are shaped and baked at high temperatures to create watch cases and other watch elements with exceptional properties. Rado's innovative methods involve mixing these powders with a plastic carrier medium, injecting the mixture into precision moulds at a whopping 1000 bar pressure. After cooling, the pieces are taken out of the mould, the plastic carrier is dissolved, and the final sintering phase at a scorching 1450&deg;C begins. One may say that this process is straight out of rocket science. As the moulded pieces are sintered, they shrink and become incredibly dense and hard, reaching an impressive 1,250 on the Vickers hardness scale. Thanks to meticulous calculations, Rado can account for this 25% size change during sintering. The result? A high-tech ceramic case that's ready for final diamond-tool machining and finishing, transforming into an impressive Rado timepiece that's as tough as it is beautiful.
